Grass Is The Word

My friend Zach Peterson snapped this photograph of a woman in her mid-50s calmly carrying at least five very healthy marijuana plants on the 26 tram near Prague's Strašnická metro station around 5 p.m. on a recent weekday. Other than a few smiles and a "Ty vole!" (a mild Czech cussword) or two, Zach says no one really paid the lady much mind.

Personal use of a small amount of marijuana (15 grams or five plants) is tolerated in the Czech Republic (as are small amounts of heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine, believe it or not). But none of us has ever seen a sight quite like this before.

Next stop, Chronic Town!

  1. In the spring of 1995, Gerry and I had some drinks at a bar in Prague Two near the old RFE/RL office. When it was time to settle the bill, the waitor ask Gerry if he would like to have a free joint. I was quite surprised about this relaxed attitude compared with the States. I do not recall if Gerry took up on the waiter's offer.

  2. That's classic, Frank. Thanks for sharing. It's still pretty relaxed, as you can see!

  3. cannabis is very good for treating many health problems(psoriasis for ex.). So very probably the woman wasnť going to use it (or sale it) as a drug but rather a cure. There are quite many shops that sell cannabis cosmetics and other healing products.:
